Organisations should be conscious of their obligation to erase data stored on internal servers, hard drives, arrays and USB drives once it is no longer needed. This applies to data held on employees, users, customers, and organisations.
ISO 27001:2022 Annex A Control 8.10 largely covers maintenance activities related to deletion and destruction of data and/or IT assets, including utilisation of specialised software and liaison with vendors specialising in data and device deletion. Consequently, ownership should be vested in the Head of IT, or equivalent.
It can be challenging to determine when data should be erased. Generally, ISO 27001:2022 Annex A Control 8.10 asks organisations to erase data when it is not needed, to reduce the risk of unwanted disclosure. That is, data being seen by, or distributed to, those who are not authorised to access it.
When the time arrives to erase data, organisations should:
Organisations should devise a deletion process by:
Prior to sending off any servers or workstations, organisations should take out any internal or external storage devices.
ISO 27001:2022 Annex A Control 8.10 has no counterpart in ISO 27001:2013 as it is a new addition.
