Most modern technologies would not function correctly without fibre, network, or power cables. Despite cables’ importance for transmitting information assets and providing information services, they pose risks to information security and the continuity of organisational operations.

It is possible for these cables to be damaged, intercepted, or interfered with, which may lead to these risks. Furthermore, cables may be damaged by personnel with access to them.

For example, suppose cyber criminals have access to fibre cables. In that case, they can use simple techniques like ‘bending the fibre’ to disrupt all network traffic, resulting in the inaccessibility of data and information.

ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 7.12 outlines how organisations can ensure that information assets transmitted over cables remain secure by implementing appropriate safeguards.

What Is The Purpose of ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 7.12?

ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 7.12 enables organisations to achieve two distinct objectives:

  1. Implementing appropriate measures to protect information assets carried via cables from unauthorised access, use, damage, or destruction.
  2. Maintaining the security of cables that transport information assets, power, and electricity to ensure the continuity of business operations.

Annex A 7.12 is preventive in nature, requiring organisations to take precautions to protect information and other critical assets carried through cables from risks.

Who Has Ownership of Annex A 7.12?

It is necessary to create an inventory of all cables, identify appropriate security measures, conduct a risk assessment, and maintain cable security in order to comply with ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 7.12.

In addition to the role and efforts of the facilities management team, the Information Security Manager should be responsible for ensuring compliance with Annex A 7.12.

General Guidance on ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 7.12

Organisations are advised to consider the following four compliance criteria in accordance with ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 7.12:

  1. To the extent feasible, telecommunications cables and power cables connecting to information processing facilities should be buried underground. Cables buried underground should be protected from accidental cuts using appropriate techniques such as armoured conduits. Alternative protection measures, such as utility poles and floor cable protectors, may be considered if an underground placement is not feasible.
  2. Power and communication cables should be segregated to eliminate the risk of interference.
  3. To protect sensitive information assets and business operations, organisations should consider the following controls for cables connected to critical information systems:
    • Installing armoured conduit, installing locked rooms & boxes, and setting up alarm systems at terminals and inspection points.
    • The use of electromagnetic shielding techniques to prevent cables from being damaged.
    • Regular cable inspections and technical sweeps should be conducted to ensure no unauthorised devices are connected to the cables.
    • Controlling access to cable rooms and patch panels by establishing procedures and measures.
    • Utilising fibre-optic cables.
  4. At both the starting and endpoints of each cable, source and destination details should be labelled to facilitate identification and inspection.

Additionally, organisations are encouraged to seek professional advice on how to manage risks associated with cable malfunctions. One last thing to consider is the risks associated with using communications and power cables by multiple organisations on shared premises.

What Are the Changes From ISO 27001:2013?

ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 7.12 replaces ISO 27001:2013 Annex A 11.2.3 (‘Cabling Security’).

While ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 7.12 is similar to its ISO 27001:2013 counterpart to a certain extent, Annex A 7.12 introduces the following requirement in the general guidance:

  • A cable should be labelled at its beginning and endpoints with the source and destination information so it can be easily inspected and identified.
