What Is The Purpose of ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 5.36?

ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 5.36 calls for organisations to gain a top-down perspective on their information security compliance, as reflected in their policies (both general and topical), rules, and standards.

Maintaining compliance with any published policies and procedures is an integral part of operating with a robust set of information security practices.

Annex A 5.36 is a preventive and corrective control that modifies risk by maintaining adherence to pre-existing policies and procedures within the scope of information security.

Who Has Ownership of Annex A 5.36?

ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 5.36 primarily focuses on operational issues. Therefore, ownership should be assigned to the COO or CISO (if present).

General Guidance on ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 5.36

An organisation’s entire bank of information security policies, rules, and standards should be available to managers and information owners (including service and product owners).

Managers should implement business-specific reporting methods (incorporating any technical tools required) on information security compliance and conduct periodic reviews highlighting areas for improvement, which are thoroughly documented, stored, and reported.

Managers should be able to take the following actions if issues are discovered and instances of non-compliance are found:

  • Determine the underlying cause of non-compliance.
  • Decide whether corrective action is necessary.
  • If necessary, implement said corrective action to ensure continued compliance.
  • Once enacted, assess any corrective actions taken to see if they were effective and identify any areas that need to be improved.

It is imperative that corrective actions are taken in a “timely manner”, ideally by the next review. At the very least, managers should be able to demonstrate progress if measures aren’t completed before the next review.

  • ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 8.15

  • ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 8.17

What Are the Changes From ISO 27001:2013?

ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 5.36 replaces two controls from ISO 27001:2013, namely:

  1. ISO 27001:2013 Annex A 18.2.2 – Compliance with security policies and standards
  2. ISO 27001:2013 Annex A 18.2.3 – Technical compliance review

ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 5.36 condenses all of the complex technical guidance offered in ISO 27001:2013 Annex A 18.2.3, which states that Managers must have the ability to review compliance wherever it is necessary.

ISO 27001:2022 Annex A 5.36 contains precisely the same set of guidance points as ISO 27001:2013 Annex A 18.2.2 regarding the actions to take when non-compliance’s are detected during a review.
