What is identity fraud?
Identity fraud, which is sometimes referred to as identity theft, is a term used to describe the unauthorised use of an individual’s personal data or personal information. There is almost always criminal intent when it comes to identity fraud, often used to deceive someone or a third party. If identity fraud is committed it can lead to the following actions being taken in your name without your knowledge or consent:
- New bank accounts opened
- Credit cards, loans and benefits applied for
- Obtaining legal documents like passports or driving licences
- Buying goods
- Taking over existing bank accounts and phone contracts
